Our History

WHERE IT
ALL STARTED

AFES groups have been gathering on university campuses for over 90 years. Founded by students for students, these local Christian groups continue to meet regularly to investigate the Bible, share the good news of Jesus, and support each other in their faith.

2008 | CU

The beginning of Ballarat CU

The Ballarat CU began in 2018 as the Christian Union with a bible study on all three campus’ (ACU, Camp St and Mount Helen) and a city wide training night at ACU. Run by two AFES apprentices they quickly trained local students to lead the group and attended the first combined regional Vic Summit with Geelong and Bendigo.

2011 | CU

The groups become official

Both ACU and Fed Uni clubs became official clubs and self-governed with the support of AFES staff from Geelong adopting the state CU logo. ACU changed their name to Christians on Campus (ConC) dues to ACU not letting cubs use the name union. Both committees had four members but combined as a committee of 8 to continue running Ballarat CU together.

2017 | CU

Christians@Uni

Both groups renamed their groups to Christians @ Uni (CU) and adopted a Ballarat CU logo which incorporated the Eureka flag design.

2022 | CU

Campus bible talks move to Fed Uni

After COVID-19, ACU CU could no longer fill all committee positions, so went into hibernation. After 14 years of hosting the city wide CU bible talks at ACU they were moved to Fed Uni, Mount Helen, Student lounge.

2024 | ACU CU official again

The Beginning of Ballarat CU

ACU CU became an official club again with a weekly bible study but it’s committee and their events ran independently from Fed Uni CU committee.

2026 | CU

Rebranding

Both CU groups of Ballarat adopted the national branding of AFES groups.

THE HISTORY
OF Ballarat CU

An AFES group called Christian Fellowship CF was in existence in the 70’s and 80’s but at some stage ceased to exist. CU as we know it today restarted in 2008 when two Geelong Deakin AFES apprentices came one day a week to three Ballarat campus’ to meet with students one-on-one, lead bible studies, run a weekly training night and outreach events. CU was the only club at ACU and previously there had been no Christian club at University of Ballarat for a couple of years. So it grew rapidly and the two apprentices came twice a week to support the clubs. CU is now the oldest running club at Federation Uni and the most active.
